Operation Beautiful by Caitlin Boyle

Leave an uplifting and encouraging note to another woman. Sometimes the simplest things are the most poignant and effective. Caitlin's book describes not only the many ways and types of notes, but the changes they've made around the world in other people's lives.

I love the concept of realizing our uniqueness is beautiful! The most significant thing about this book is about how Caitlin took her own difficulties and overflowed her gems of wisdom out onto others. Each time we battle harsh reality, we have the opportunity to reach out and help someone else win that battle. Exactly what I write and teach about--use the things you learn to help others. Our value is not in what we look like and our value does not depend on someone else's choices or opinions.

My favorite section of her book is Shut Out Energy Vampires. It's in pages 90-91. I think the most helpful notation is how the "Energy Vampires feed off your reaction to their Negative Noise, so ignore the behavior as much as possible." She teaches through ideas how to cope with these difficult people in our lives. I heartily agree. Energy Vampires are all about being negative, sucking your positive energy, and controlling those around them. Enjoy detaching from these vamps. It's a whole new sense of freedom :-)

Operation Beautiful is a lovely focus on empowering women to be who they are not what someone else wants them to be. She challenges women to take their eyes off of a specific body part and reach outside of themselves to create joy and contribution. I think we've gotten so caught up in the objectification of women that we don't realize we objectify ourselves when we take our bodies apart in front of the mirror. We buy into the same practice that we condemn in the media and porn businesses by putting the camera of our own mind on one piece of our body.

Our lives aren't about a number, a "look", or what other people think. We were created unique and beautiful to bring glory to God. He created a special body, a special set of gifts, and a special purpose just for you. When our eyes are so focused on a chubby thigh or a stretch mark, we don't recognize the amazing gift in the body God has created just for us. We forget to go after the dreams placed inside us because we're too busy listening to the Negative Noise around us.

Should we worry about our weight? No. Should we take care of the body we have so we can contribute good into the world around us? Absolutely.

Go and act. Be the beautiful person God created uniquely for your place in the world. Don't try to take someone else's place. There's a reason you are made just so. You have a dream that belongs only to you. How can you achieve it if you are racing after someone else's dream? Be beautifully and uniquely you.

Decisions, Decisions

Today I'm exploring how to publish the Creative Cooking Series to hard copy.  It's out as ebook and CD book copies already. Now the requests from actual bookstores are coming in for a standard book style too.

Two books with more planned.
Each meets a special need. Cooking for Colitis helps people with IBD issues. Simple Elegance helps people make simple, elegant, inexpensive meals. Same recipes, two different markets.

The problem is the cost to self-publish. Two books in the series means two sets of costs. The other problem is that I've already received requests for orders. The CD and e-books were doing fine. In fact in the self-publishing world, I've done great. Most self-published authors don't break even. So far I've been able to do that. Now though, I'm being asked to take it one step further.

If it were a standard book, no worries. That's actually more affordable because of the black and white printing. But these books are heavy with photography. I don't want to lose those photos because it's what makes the book special. The cook can see what the recipe is supposed to look like and several recipes show the stages of the recipe. So to meet the cost issue, I can only do one book at a time. It makes me sad to have to choose. Which would you do?

Another possibility is in presales. By preselling the book, it's possible to help offset the costs. But again, we're looking at the costs times two. In the meantime, I'm trying to decide on a solid company that will meet my needs with this series. Not an easy task. I'd love to hear from others about their experiences in choosing a company. I'm considering Westbow, Create Space, and open to others that allow me to have my design inside versus the cookbook template style designs. Remember I need to print full color.

Have you ever thought of self-publishing?
If you did, what would you publish?

Lucky Baby by Meredith Efken

Meredith Efken wrote so skillfully that I had a hard time realizing that I was reading words on the page. It was so beautiful I watched the scenes unfold seemlessly in my mind. The characters immersed me in their world. Such rich description and yet it's not overwhelming or literary. Lucky Baby is a rich exploration of family relationships, trust, love, and internal growth. International adoption is complicated, but it brings great joy to the families that enrich the love in the world through it. Meredith Efken brings out some of the difficulties, but also shares the joy. I really loved the realistic couple conversations between Meg and Lewis. Some humorous treats keep the book from being too heavy while deeply exploring complicated family connections. My heart wrenched with Weng Ming as she met disappointment after disappointment and with Meg Lindsey as she walks through it all with such courage. This is a must read!

You can find the book online here.

Bio:
Meredith Efken is the author of the critically acclaimed SAHM I Am series and has been a finalist for the Romantic Times Reviewer's Choice award and the ACFW Carol Award. She and her husband, who are enjoying learning Argentine tango, live with their two daughters in Nebraska. One of their daughters is adopted from China, and it was that experience that inspired this book.

Blessed to have read Lucky Baby.

Vanishing Act by Liz Johnson

I have several books to review in the next few weeks and Liz Johnson's new Love Inspired Suspense is one I'm tickled to have the opportunity to review. Liz worked in the past booking blog tours and book reviews for other authors. It's a joy to do one for her new book.

I'm totally enjoying Vanishing Act. The unusual twist of having the lead female character become an auto mechanic is interesting. I know a few ladies who really enjoy this work. They change their oil and actually take care of a lot more than I thought was possible. Each time I meet a lady mechanic, it's a surprise. Liz's character is too. She's smart, interesting, and very much a female. I like that she has to face her fears in order to grow and that she has trust issues. She's in a suspense, after all :-)

The male lead is assigned to find and protect her. His job is complicated by hitting an object in the road and that his assignment completely changed her looks.

Vanishing Act (Steeple Hill Love Inspired Suspense)Vanishing Act by Liz Johnson

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I liked Vanishing Act a lot because the writer played with our common stereotypes. It's fun to see women break out of standard roles and interesting to see the decisions people make based on erroneous beliefs. Bravo that our heroine was strong, but human. I loved that she enjoyed a healthy lifestyle too. So often the skinny heroine eats a ton of junk food (like the Closer, one of my favorite shows, unrealistic in cause/effect) but never sees the actual results happen to her body. This heroine exercises away her stress. Love that! Thank you, Liz Johnson, for not giving us another stress eater, way too overdone. Nora is courageous and shows us how she builds up the courage to face her fears. She can be quirky and not be all about the food. This is a swift, sweet romantic suspense. Good plot and good character creation and excellent faith moments that are realistic. Those little breath prayers we say through out the day. I enjoyed it very much.

Escaping the Cauldron by Kristine McGuire & Interview!

Hi all,

I found out about this book and felt it was very important to share. It's so easy to be wooed or drawn into something that's not good for us. This is Kristine's story of how that happened to her. I hope you'll not only enjoy it, but think about how her story might parallel yours. How could you be knocked off course? How would you get back? How would that affect the people and relationships around you?

I recently had the conversation with a friend about her belief in fortune telling and the ability to predict the future. Look at how close that thought is to the concept of prophecy. How easy it would be to slide in the wrong direction.

Do I believe in prophecy? Absolutely! Do I believe in mediums and fortune tellers? I believe they have the opportunity to tap into the wrong power. The power that lies and does not have your best interest at heart. Can you hear the truth from someone like that? It's possible. But what motive is behind it? For me, prophecy is a word from the one true God that does not draw you away from Him and does not set you on a path of trusting in something other than God. It has to follow scriptural boundaries put in place to protect us. It's never in disagreement with scripture or the character of God.

What about you? What do you believe?

Fascinating book and topic. Here's an interview shared with me and I have permission to share it with you.

God bless you and protect you on your journey too,
Angie

Welcome Kristine McGuire:

What is the book about?

The book is part testimony of how I went from committed, albeit legalistic, Christian for twenty-nine years to witch, medium, and ghost hunter for eight years before God restored my faith and life. It details my personal struggle with trying to be "the perfect Christian" while being drawn to the Occult from childhood. The book is also a Biblical study that examines the current pop-cultural interest in the occult (in particular ghosts, hauntings, and mediums) and how this interest is affecting Christians as well as their beliefs about the supernatural.

Why call it Escaping the Cauldron?

This is actually the first book in a series, What Christians Need to Know about the Occult. It is a series of collections written from my former experiences as a witch, medium, and ghost hunter. This book is primarily about ghost hunting, mediumship, and the paranormal but I chose "Escaping the Cauldron" as the main title because witchcraft was truly my entry into the arena of occult interest and exploration including such things as divination, psychic ability, spirit guides, mediumship, ghost hunting, etc.

What do you think is the most important chapter of the book?

I think there are many important chapters but "Spiritual Warfare" and "How Should Christians Respond?"are the two which take everything discussed in the previous chapters bringing it all together, helping the reader understand their authority in Jesus Christ and leading the way to a ready defense for any kind of paranormal or supernatural event they may experience in their life as a Christian.

What do you hope to accomplish with this book?

I hope to inform and equip Christians with information about the occult. Additionally I pray the church will begin to acknowledge the presence of the spiritual world around us and listen to people who come forward with stories or claims of paranormal experiences without dismissing them immediately. When the church refuses to listen or offer any Biblical assistance, many people are forced to seek help elsewhere. This generally means seeking out ghost hunters, mediums, and psychics. I also hope to encourage Christians who may be questioning their faith to seek a deeper relationship with God, especially if they are stuck in a form of legalism. Our answers truly can be found in Jesus Christ.

Where is the book currently available to purchase?

The book is available in paperback and Kindle editions at Amazon. The book is also available in paperback and e-book editions at my blog site: Kristine ReMixed at www.KristineMcGuire.com and Lulu Publishing.

How are you available to the Christian community?
I write a daily blog, Kristine ReMixed at www.KristineMcGuire.com, on a variety of topics including faith, marriage, prayer, spiritual gifts, and the occult. I also work with my husband through Big Fish Ministries at www.BigFishMinistries.com, ministering through speaking with him at church and para-church events about marriage, facilitating seven day or special event prayer rooms, helping the homeless, etc. I am also available to speak at any youth, women's, or church events on a variety of Christian topics.

Miniature Horse Competition: Montana Mondays

Mini Horse Competition Jumping

The Western Montana Fair starts Tuesday, but the youth 4-H competition is the weekend before the big fair. These little guys are spectacular fun and very, very intelligent animals. The young people working the horses were learning confidence, courage, and dedication.

Below is the 2 person cart. A mini can pull 4-5 times their weight. I can't wait to train my mini, Spanky, to cart :-) See the building behind? It's been a mainstay at the Fairgrounds here in Missoula for years. Our fairgrounds has been swallowed by the city. It's now middle of the city. Any move of the fairgrounds has been blocked because we all just like our fair where it is! And, by the way, the buildings are used year round for a ton of social activities. But today, it was minis and 4-H to my heart's content.
